Can someone help me with this launched projectile physics problem?
A spy in a speed boat is being chased down a river by government officials in a larger craft. If the spy travels at 24 m/s and the officials travel at a speed of 15 m/s, how far from each other will the two vessels land after they fly off a 5.0 m waterfall?

This problem requires two parts: (1) the falling of the boat from the waterfall (y-direction), and (2) the boat flying off the waterfall in the direction of motion and landing some distance away from the waterfall (x-direction).
The boat falls down d = 5 meters.
v(f) = sqrt(2gd)
v(f) = gt = sqrt(2gd)
t = sqrt(2d/g) = 1.01 sec
this is the amount of time that the boats stays in the air before hitting the ground after falling off the waterfall.
The distance the boats move in the x-direction:
Spy boat: x = v(i) t = (24)(1.01) = 24.23 meters
Gov’t boat: x = v(i) t = (15)(1.01) = 15.14 meters
The distance between the two boats is:
24.23 – 15.14 = 9.09 meters

The horizontal components of the velocity remain unchanged
Thus the distance between the 2 vessels when they land
= (29 – 19)*1.09 = 10.9 m
