What is the official name for a thin plastic kitchen backsplash?
The house was built in 1992 and we are planning to install a tile backsplash in the kitchen, but we don’t know what adhesive to use since we can’t figure out what the existing surface is. It’s like a very thin white layer of plastic over the existing wall and it runs up and behind the cupboards and down past the counter. So it wouldn’t be easy to remove. Does anyone have an idea what this would be called or what adhesive we could use for tiling over it?
According to the Federal Government General Accounting Office (GAO) it’s officially called a T.P.K.B.
Actually and seriously it’s probably melamine. That was and is used for this kind of application. It’s basically plastic and any adhesive that will adhere to plastic will work.
In reading the answers I probably agree with the people that suggest removing it if you can. You could probably get away with tiling over it but it really depends on the integrity of the adhesive holding it down. Could you just cut it where it goes under the cupboards and pull the rest of it off?

It sounds like laminate. Talk to the people at the tile store. I think if you rough up the surface first tile mastic will stick.
